"“He said that the United States could be very helpful in running those plants with its electricity and utility expertise,” the summary added, with US ownership offering “the best protection” for Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Press reports said Zelenskyy and Trump only discussed the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, which is under the control of Russian forces.
The six-unit Zaporizhzhia nuclear station is the largest in Europe with a net capacity of 5,700 MW when all units are fully operational.
Zaporizhzhia, near the city of Enerhodar, close to the frontline of fighting in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since 2022.
All six units are in a state of cold shutdown, defined by nuclear regulators as meaning the reactor coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature below about 90°C following a reactor cooldown. Cold shutdown reduces the need for cooling and lessens the risk of an accident. In a cold shutdown, the reactor is in a subcritical state, meaning no nuclear fission is taking place, and the fuel and control rods can be safely removed and replaced.
IAEA Has Repeatedly Warned Of Accident Risk
Ukraine and its allies have repeatedly urged Russia to withdraw its troops from the plant. Throughout its occupation, the plant has been repeatedly disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid due to Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Rafael Grossi has on numerous occasions sounded the alarm about the continued risk of nuclear accidents as a result of Russia’s attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Ukraine’s power grid.
Three years of Russian strikes on its power grid have left Ukraine reliant on nuclear power for more than half of its electricity generation. That nuclear power is generated by three functioning stations – Khmelnitski, Rivne and South Ukraine.
Ukraine’s state nuclear company Energoatom is planning to complete Units 3 and 4 at Khmelnitski, in western Ukraine, construction of which is suspended.
The plan is to buy reactor equipment that was produced by Russia for the abandoned Belene nuclear power station project in Bulgaria.
Construction of two VVER-1000 units at Khmelnitski-3 and -4 was abandoned in 1990 in the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl accident in Soviet Ukraine and because of financial shortages."
@MAKS23 Why would #Ukraine need help to run their #nuclear power plants? The #Americans don't know how to operate them, neither does the #russian #orcs
I would see it as a potential information leak if allowing #maga supporters inside #Ukrainian #NPP
I think this is a move trying to prevent Ukraine to enrich #Uranium / #Plutonium and get their own #security guarantee.

youtu.be"The director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has said that generating the first kilowatt-hours from the new nuclear power plants in Turkey and Bangladesh - plus pouring first concrete for Leningrad II's fourth unit and putting the first new Kursk unit into commercial operation - are its priorities for the current year.
In a speech in Sarov during a Rosatom information day, Alexei Likhachev said that in nuclear energy, the goal was to fulfil the national plan for expanding capacity up to 2042: "We have to build 38 units, including in new regions for us - in Siberia and the Far East. And create a working fourth-generation energy system in Seversk."
"This year, we need to work out all aspects of the construction of a two-unit station in Primorsky Krai (in Russia's Far East). This is a direct order from the president. The nuclear power plant (NPP) in Primorsky Krai must be synchronised with the grid as early as 2032. Another task for this year is to pour the first concrete on the fourth unit of Leningrad NPP-2 and put the first unit of Kursk NPP-2 into commercial operation," he said, in the speech whose text has been published by the company's magazine Strana Rosatom.
On the subject of exports and "our leadership in the global market", he said "we will continue to develop cooperation with the BRICS+ and CIS countries, create alliances and partnerships ... the key tasks for this year are to obtain the first kilowatt-hours at the launch sites in Turkey and Bangladesh. We need to begin implementing the contract for the construction of" the small modular reactor nuclear power plant planned in Uzbekistan "and make every effort to obtain contracts for the construction of high-power units".
He said Rosatom's aim was to increase productivity by 12% to allow wage growth of 10%, and the goal was an "increase in the quality and effectiveness of investment and project activities. The target level of profitability is at least 26%. The return on investment in projects should exceed the cost of capital, not only borrowed, but also our own. Given the high cost of money, we cannot afford unprofitable projects. Otherwise, we will give all the income to the banks".
Key achievements for the previous six years were listed, including 5 new units being commissioned in Russia and abroad, construction began of 10 units abroad and 8 nuclear-powered ships were now working on the Northern Sea Route, a number which had doubled between 2018 and 2024.
Looking ahead to the next six years, he said that "it won't get any easier in the coming years", with the growing number of projects in nuclear energy and other fields of work.
Likhachev, listing the challenges, said competition in the global market was increasing, and Rosatom "must constantly work to strengthen our leadership, despite economic pressure and sanctions". He said the international "political situation remains difficult, the world has become extremely unstable, regimes are changing, regional crises are developing". There was a "shortage of technology and high-tech products on the domestic market" with further development of import substitution required. There was also increased competition in the labour market, especially for specialists, and there were the "difficult economic and financial conditions in which we will have to work - the cost of money is now extremely high. This is the main challenge - to learn to work effectively in conditions of limited resources"."

"With a new poll showing that the majority of West Australians support lifting the state's ban on uranium mining, Australia's national mining association is calling on the state's Labor Party to let voters know if it would consider overturning the ban if it retains power in the upcoming general election.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) commissioned the poll, which was carried out by market research consultancy Painted Dog Research. Well over half - 57% - of the 806 respondents to the poll said they would like to see Western Australia's current ban on uranium mining, implemented in 2017, lifted. This is up from a 2023 industry poll that found 49% per cent in support of uranium mining.
Asked "Do you support uranium mining as a way of reducing the world's carbon emissions?" 58% of respondents said they did, while 15% expressed "little or no support". But awareness of Australia's long history of uranium mining was low, with only 54% saying they knew that uranium has been mined safely in Australia for more than 50 years.
AMEC CEO Warren Pearce said the poll demonstrates that West Australians can "see the value" in uranium mining and "points to a community understanding that WA is a mining state, with the professionalism and skill to deal with uranium mining in a safe and responsible way".
Western Australia (WA) has significant known uranium resources but the Labor-led government has banned uranium mining since 2017, with the exception of four uranium projects that had already received ministerial approval from the previous government: Wiluna, Kintyre, Mulga Rock and Yeelirrie. "Quite frankly, it's time for WA Labor to reconsider the current ban and move with the times," said Pearce.
Australia has double the uranium resources of Kazakhstan and Canada, Pearce said, but is only the fourth largest producer. Western Australia "has the potential to be the eighth largest uranium source in the world", he said. "It would create more jobs, attract investment, diversify the economy from iron ore and gold, and create a new billion dollar commodity export market.
"With job losses in the nickel and lithium sectors over the past 12 to 18 months, now is the perfect time to throw out the ban and look to add a new commodity to our mining mix."
The Western Australia general election is due to take place on 8 March. Respondents to the survey were aged over 18 and from both metropolitan and regional parts of Western Australia."

While looking for details about the #Chernobyl attack and the expansion of the Khmelnytsky #nuclear power plant expansion, I came across such a fascinating position of #Greenpeace #Ukraine on the latter investment. Of course, negative. To fully appreciate the fanatical detachment of this organisation from reality, just read these three arguments:
‘Ukraine has had negative experiences with nuclear energy because of Chernobyl’ - so logically it also has “negative experiences” with renewables because of Nova Kachowka, right? RIGHT?!
‘The war with the Russian Federation proved that centralised generation does not work’ - except that Ukraine has only had electricity for two years thanks to nuclear power plants, which the Russians did not dare to attack, even though they easily damaged all the conventional power plants, the PV in Tokmak, Nova Kakhovka and other hydroelectric power plants on the Dnipro.
“only renewables will save us” - as we can see, renewables are absolutely widespread on the front line and for powering shops during power outages, everyone happily runs on PV and small windmills (except no, everybody relies on small petrol generators)

Yes, #Australia green left generally is very much supportive of women in STEM.
But no, if the woman in question happens to be a #nuclear engineer then she’s no longer a woman in STEM who has her expertise and ideas. In such case she’s a “former Miss America” and tool of world capitalism. That “Miss America pageant” has no longer any brains of her own, she’s just being “ruthlessness required to achieve perfection as a capitalist woman”
