nVidia's annual revenue two years ago was $27 billion.

When they reported earnings Wednesday, revenue for the last *quarter* was $39.3 billion. Wall St. was disappointed and the stock fell 8%.

Nvidia has unveiled and released its new RTX5000 series GPUs, what do you think of it, as a whole?

It is interesting it took this long to find out the root cause for these issues. It never was about the connector itself. The connector allowing poor connection to be made was naturally contributing as it then resulted in the wires overheating and connectors melting. But that wasn't the root cause.

The overheating / melting occurs because of the removed safety feature on the card side.

#NVIDIA consciously simplified the RTX 4090 power input circuitry to remove a safety feature that existed in the RTX 3090. In the 3090, two wires would get combined to one, and there were three separate power shunts. Any problem in the power delivery would lead to the card shutting down.

In the 4090, all six 12V lines combine to a single terminal, which is then power-shunted as one. Any problem in the individual wires or connector pins will not be noticed. If there is a power delivery problem, the remaining connections will take the load and melt or catch fire. RTX 4090 cards have been melting connectors regularly.

So, RTX 5090 is now available. The cards are several thousand dollars/euros. They also omit this RTX 3090 security feature that likely cost a maximum of a couple of euros/dollars to add.

At $WORK, the combination of #GNOME, #Wayland, and #nVidia on my #Linux desktop leads to *atrocious* input-latencies that had me scurrying back to #XOrg. 😓

Something-something about nVidia drivers not being good enough for the Wayland Compositor… (but good for XOrg).

If true, beyond screwing up elections, misinformation can now destroy enormous amounts of market capitalization in an instant.

Be skeptical about the claims of any big advancements in the AI space (especially from OpenAI).

@blaine If anybody is still on any Meta products like Facebook, Instagram, etc., and muskrats Twitter. That’s where you need to start your #Boycott . Also, Google they’re all in on the coup. #OpenAI, #Nvidia stock you need to dump them now.

Initial bits of the new nova-drm #Linux #kernel graphics driver for modern #Nvidia GPUs (and thus #Nouveau successor) written in #Rust have been submitted for review:

lore.kernel.org/dri-devel/2025

'"Add the initial nova-core driver stub.

nova-core is intended to serve as a common base for nova-drm (the corresponding DRM driver) and the vGPU manager VFIO driver […]

In order to avoid the chicken and egg problem […] nova-core kicks off as a driver stub and is subsequently developed upstream."'

This Deepseek thing is amusing. All those investors, companies thought they were going to have to ride the wave for a while, then cash out.

Looks like that won't be happening.

@estherschindler How exactly is installing #NVIDIA drivers on #Linux related to depression?

I'm late to the game, I admit (with roughly 3 decades Linux experience, I've managed to get my first laptop with an NVIDIA GPU that I care about), but on Fedora 40 it was like searching on how to do it, and installing one package, and let the distribution handle it.

Re-enabling Safeboot was slightly more exciting, but even there the excitement was watching the signing key being added to the UEFI BIOS.
