@htothedip Mastodon generally doesn't encourage opposing viewpoints or tolerate them very well, it's true; there's a definite underlying hint of "You're either with us, or you're defederated." That said, knowing that, I think of this as less an echo chamber and more a club of like-minded people, some of whom simply have more of an interest in certain topics than others.
