I think that in the East being #leftist means being an advocate for social justice and better life for all. Because we have seen how quickly dictatorship of the proletariat turns into dictatorship of the central committee of the communist party. (Spolier: the time needed is negative!)
In the West being #leftist means trying to apply dubious ideas dreamt of by
- a 19th century thinker, which could have worked in 19th century perhaps,
- in 20th century
to 21st century, while being guided by parties backed by the state actors.
I know that fighting against state actors for "the minds of the youth" is a very unyielding job, so just accepting that in the West the #left thought has not evolved beyond "means of production go brr" is the best way to approach this sorry left-left dichotomy.
