The students in my upper-level electrodynamics course are taking their final exam right now, which always reminds me of the time I told my students they could bring a formula sheet to the final exam as long as it was on one side of a piece of paper.

Like, there are ways to self-rationalize not vaccinating, attending leisure gatherings and even going to work sick. We all do things we know we probably shouldn't.

But the mask thing is pure 100% self-aware absolute egoism. I *will* remember you are capable of that.

I'm a pretty empathetic person normally, so just for my own sanity, a couple months into the pandemic I'd made up a very simple mental rule for myself.

A person who prefers a real possibility of causing someone else's death or disability over having to smell their own breath does not deserve sympathy, now or ever again.

This year there are people actively being killed and that's causing us here some minor financial problems, so seeing people for who they are got even easier.
